- TRANSPORT — it carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and carbon dioxide back, digested food from the intestine to the cells, nitrogenous wastes to the kidneys, and hormones from the endocrine glands to their target organs.
- DEFENCE — the white blood cells destroy germs by phagocytosis and by producing antibodies, while the platelets and plasma proteins clot the blood at a wound, preventing further loss and sealing out infection.

A third, if three are asked for: REGULATION — blood distributes heat around the body and keeps the temperature and the pH steady.
