Within the AMNIOTIC SAC (amnion), the membrane surrounding the developing foetus in the uterus — so the fluid lies between the amnion and the foetus.
Explanation
The foetus floats in this fluid throughout pregnancy.
Its functions follow from its position: it acts as a SHOCK ABSORBER protecting the foetus from jolts, keeps the temperature CONSTANT, prevents the delicate tissues from drying out or sticking to the amnion, and allows the foetus to MOVE FREELY, which is necessary for the proper development of its muscles and bones.
Its escape when the sac ruptures — "the breaking of the waters" — is one of the signs that labour has begun.
