THROMBOCYTES (blood platelets) help in the CLOTTING OF BLOOD. They gather at the site of a wound and release thromboplastin, which starts the chain of reactions forming a clot, so that bleeding stops.
The clot serves two purposes and both are worth a clause: it PREVENTS FURTHER LOSS OF BLOOD, and it SEALS the wound against germs.
THE CLOTTING SEQUENCE in brief, since a question may ask for it: platelets release THROMBOPLASTIN thromboplastin, with CALCIUM and vitamin K, converts PROTHROMBIN into THROMBIN thrombin converts soluble FIBRINOGEN into insoluble FIBRIN, whose threads form the mesh of the clot
