Explanation
The two essential words are SUDDEN and INHERITABLE.
INHERITABLE distinguishes a mutation from an ACQUIRED character. A scar or a suntan changes the body but not the genes, and is not passed on; a mutation alters the DNA itself and can be.
Only a mutation in the GERM cells is passed to offspring; one in a body cell affects that individual alone — which is what most cancers are.
Mutations are the ultimate source of the VARIATION on which natural selection acts.
