Answer
Exam answer
HAEMOGLOBIN.
Explanation
Haemoglobin is the red respiratory pigment of the red blood cells (erythrocytes). Each molecule contains IRON, and it is the iron that binds oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin.
That is why a shortage of iron in the diet causes ANAEMIA — too little haemoglobin, so less oxygen is carried, producing tiredness, pallor and breathlessness.
Its affinity for CARBON MONOXIDE is 200-300 times greater than for oxygen, which is what makes that gas so dangerous: it occupies the haemoglobin almost irreversibly and the tissues are starved of oxygen.
