FERTILISATION takes place in part 5, the FALLOPIAN TUBE (oviduct) — usually in its upper third.
IMPLANTATION takes place in part 2, the UTERUS — in its thickened inner lining, the endometrium.
The two events happen in DIFFERENT organs and several days apart — a point students often blur together.
THE SEQUENCE: the ovum is released from the ovary at ovulation and drawn into the fallopian tube, where a sperm meets it and FERTILISATION occurs. The resulting zygote divides as it travels down, becoming a morula and then a blastocyst, and about six or seven days later it embeds itself in the uterine lining — IMPLANTATION.
The placenta then develops at the point of implantation, forming the link between mother and foetus.
