DYNAMIC balance — the SEMICIRCULAR CANALS. STATIC balance — the UTRICULUS and SACCULUS.
Both lie in the INNER ear.
The two words carry the distinction: DYNAMIC means moving, STATIC means still.
SEMICIRCULAR CANALS — three canals lying in three planes at RIGHT ANGLES, so movement in any direction disturbs the endolymph in at least one of them. They register rotation and sudden changes of direction. UTRICULUS and SACCULUS — contain hair cells and tiny granules of calcium carbonate (OTOLITHS). When the head tilts, gravity pulls the granules, they bend the hairs, and the new position is signalled.
This also explains DIZZINESS after spinning: the fluid keeps moving for a moment after you stop, so the canals report a turn that the eyes contradict.
Note that the ear does TWO unrelated jobs — hearing (cochlea) and balance.
