The incus lies in the MIDDLE EAR, between the MALLEUS and the STAPES.
Explanation
The three ear ossicles in order from the eardrum inwards: MALLEUS (hammer) → INCUS (anvil) → STAPES (stirrup). The incus is the middle one, so name the bones on either side of it.
Their function is to AMPLIFY the vibrations received from the tympanic membrane and pass them to the oval window — amplification being necessary because it takes far more force to set a LIQUID vibrating than air.
The stapes, the last in the chain, is the smallest bone in the human body.
