AMNIOTIC FLUID.
Explanation
The amniotic fluid fills the amniotic sac in which the foetus floats.
Its functions: it acts as a SHOCK ABSORBER protecting the foetus from jerks and blows, maintains a CONSTANT TEMPERATURE, keeps the tissues moist and prevents them sticking to the amnion, and allows the foetus to MOVE FREELY — which is necessary for the proper development of its muscles and bones.
Its escape when the sac ruptures — "the breaking of the waters" — is one of the signs that labour has begun.
