Explanation
The malleus (hammer) is the FIRST of the three ear ossicles. Its attachment to the eardrum is what allows it to pick up the vibrations.
The chain in order from the eardrum inwards: MALLEUS (hammer) → INCUS (anvil) → STAPES (stirrup), the stapes fitting into the OVAL WINDOW of the cochlea.
Their purpose is to AMPLIFY the vibrations, which is necessary because it takes far more force to set a LIQUID vibrating than air, and the inner ear is fluid-filled.
