Haemoglobin is the IRON-containing red pigment that binds oxygen, and it is present ONLY in the red blood cells — white cells and platelets contain none.
The word ERYTHRO- means red, which identifies the term.
A mature mammalian red cell is a BICONCAVE DISC with NO NUCLEUS, which leaves more room for haemoglobin, increases the surface area for gaseous exchange, and lets the cell bend through capillaries narrower than itself. It lives about 120 days and is then destroyed in the SPLEEN.
