RECESSIVE (allele).
Explanation
A RECESSIVE allele is MASKED when a contrasting DOMINANT allele is present. It expresses itself only in the HOMOZYGOUS RECESSIVE state — tt, when both alleles are recessive.
THE WORD SUPPRESSED IS THE CLUE, and it matters that the allele is suppressed rather than destroyed. It is carried on unchanged through the F1 generation and reappears in a quarter of the F2 — which is exactly how Mendel knew it had survived intact, and the reasoning that led him to the idea of a gene as a discrete particle.
