Deafness is caused due to the rupturing of the EARDRUM (tympanic membrane / tympanum).

Explanation

The PINNA is the visible flap of the outer ear. It merely COLLECTS sound waves and directs them into the auditory canal — losing it would reduce hearing slightly but would not cause deafness, since it is made of cartilage and carries no receptors.

The EARDRUM is the thin membrane that VIBRATES when sound waves strike it and passes those vibrations to the ear ossicles. If it is ruptured the chain is broken and deafness follows.

It is only about 0.1 mm thick, which is why sharp objects in the ear are dangerous — the point the 2018 paper asks about directly.
