Explanation
The OVAL WINDOW is where the STAPES — the last of the three ear ossicles — fits, passing the amplified vibrations from the middle ear into the fluid of the inner ear.
THE ROUND WINDOW serves the opposite purpose: since liquid cannot be compressed, the round window bulges outward to relieve the pressure as the oval window is pushed in. Without it the fluid could not move at all and no sound would be heard.
