(1) Two independent Dominions, INDIA and PAKISTAN, would come into existence from 15 AUGUST 1947, and each was free to leave the Commonwealth. (2) The Constituent Assemblies of the two Dominions were empowered to frame their own constitutions, and would also function as their legislatures until then. (3) The office of the Secretary of State for India was abolished, and British paramountcy over the Princely States lapsed, each State being free to join either Dominion. (4) Until the new constitutions were framed, each Dominion would be governed under the Government of India Act of 1935, with the Governor-General acting as constitutional head on the advice of the Dominion ministry.
