The immediate cause of the Second World War was the German invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939. Britain and France had guaranteed Poland’s independence, and when Hitler ignored their ultimatum they declared war on 3 September 1939. The other options are all real events — the annexation of Austria (1938) and of Czechoslovakia (1938-39) — but they were met with APPEASEMENT, not war. Poland is where appeasement ended, which is why it and not the earlier aggressions began the war.
