The Sessions Court is the highest CRIMINAL court of a district, trying serious offences such as theft, dacoity and murder; it alone can pass a sentence of death, subject to confirmation by the High Court. Its civil counterpart is the Court of the District Judge. The same officer presides over both, called the District Judge in civil matters and the Sessions Judge in criminal ones.
