Awadh was annexed by Lord Dalhousie in 1856 on the PRETEXT OF MISGOVERNANCE — the charge that its Nawab, Wajid Ali Shah, ruled badly — not under the Doctrine of Lapse, since he had heirs. This is the standard trap of the chapter: the Doctrine of Lapse took Satara, Jhansi, Nagpur, Sambalpur and Udaipur; AWADH went by alleged misrule. Awadh matters most of all, because much of the Bengal Army was recruited there and its annexation turned the sepoys against the British.
