Explain any three consequences of World War II.

(1) ENORMOUS LOSS OF LIFE AND PROPERTY — about 50 million people died, cities across Europe and Asia were reduced to rubble, economies were shattered, and the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki opened the nuclear age. (2) THE FORMATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS in October 1945, created to maintain international peace where the League of Nations had failed; and the swift END OF COLONIALISM, as the exhausted European powers gave up their empires and India, Burma, Ceylon and the African colonies won independence. (3) THE EMERGENCE OF TWO SUPERPOWERS AND THE COLD WAR — Britain and France declined while the United States and the Soviet Union rose to dominance, and the world divided into a capitalist bloc led by America and a communist bloc led by Russia, beginning an uneasy peace of rivalry and an arms race.

One mark per consequence. Cover three different KINDS — human and material, institutional, political — rather than three examples of destruction. The link worth making explicit: the division into two blocs is exactly what the Non-Aligned Movement was founded to stay out of, and the end of colonialism produced the newly free nations that created it.
