A Lok Adalat, or "People’s Court", is a forum set up under the Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987 where disputes are settled informally by NEGOTIATION AND COMPROMISE between the parties themselves, rather than by a contested trial.
It provides speedy and inexpensive justice — there is no court fee — particularly for those who cannot afford litigation, and its award is final and binding with no appeal against it.
The definition must contain the idea of settlement by COMPROMISE — that is what distinguishes a Lok Adalat from an ordinary court, where one party wins and the other loses. The name itself, People’s Court, is worth giving. Adding the speed and cost advantage covers the follow-up question that usually accompanies this one.
