The Revolt brought MUGHAL RULE TO A FORMAL END. The rebels had proclaimed BAHADUR SHAH II as Emperor of India, so the British treated him as the head of the rebellion.

After the recapture of Delhi he was tried, deposed and exiled to Rangoon, where he died in 1862. His sons were shot, and it was declared that no descendant of his would ever bear the title of Emperor. The Mughal dynasty, which had ruled since 1526, was thus extinguished.

Explanation

Two marks: the end of the dynasty, and the fate of Bahadur Shah himself. The examiners’ report notes that some candidates answered with the disrespect shown to Bahadur Shah, or with the end of COMPANY rule — the latter is a real consequence of 1857 but answers a different question. Read whether the paper asks about MUGHAL rule or COMPANY rule. The date 1526 for the founding of the dynasty gives the answer weight.
