A Lok Adalat, or "People’s Court", is a forum set up under the Legal Services Authorities Act of 1987 in which disputes are settled informally by NEGOTIATION AND COMPROMISE between the parties themselves, rather than by a contested trial.
It provides speedy and inexpensive justice — there is no court fee — particularly for those who cannot afford litigation, and its award is final and binding with no appeal.
The definition must contain settlement by COMPROMISE — that is what distinguishes a Lok Adalat from an ordinary court, where one side wins and the other loses. The name itself, People’s Court, is worth giving. Adding the speed-and-cost advantage covers the follow-up question that usually accompanies this one.
