(1) The Himalayas shut out the icy winds blowing from Central Asia, saving north India from severe winters. (2) They force the moisture-laden south-west monsoon winds to rise and shed their rain within India, preventing the monsoon from escaping into Tibet. The climate on the two sides of the range is therefore entirely different.
