compareTo() walks both strings together and stops at the first position where they differ, returning the difference of the two ASCII codes. A, N, G and E all match; at index 4 the characters are 'R' (82) and 'L' (76), so it returns 82 - 76 = 6. The sign tells you the order: positive means the calling string comes later alphabetically. If one string is a prefix of the other, the result is the difference in lengths.
