Abstraction is the principle of showing only the essential features of an object to the user while hiding the unnecessary internal details of how it works.
Example: when you press the accelerator of a car, the car moves faster — you need not know how the engine achieves it.
Explanation
Give the definition and one everyday example; the example usually carries half the marks. Keep abstraction apart from encapsulation, since they are easily confused: abstraction hides COMPLEXITY (what the user need not know), while encapsulation hides DATA by binding it with the methods that act on it.
