XYLEM conducts WATER AND MINERALS upward from the roots to the stem and leaves. Of the four statements, only (a) describes that correctly.
Check each wrong option against the definition: (b) is a flat denial — xylem certainly does conduct water in stems (c) and (d) describe PHLOEM, not xylem. Conducting FOOD is the phloem’s job.
THE DISTINCTION, which is examined constantly: XYLEM — carries WATER and MINERALS, UPWARD only, root to leaf PHLOEM — carries prepared FOOD, in BOTH directions, from the leaves to wherever it is needed (translocation)
