PHOTOSYNTHESIS is the process by which GREEN plants manufacture their own food from simple inorganic raw materials.
Carbon dioxide from the air enters the leaf through the stomata, and water is absorbed from the soil by the roots. In the presence of SUNLIGHT, trapped by CHLOROPHYLL in the chloroplasts, these are combined to form GLUCOSE, and OXYGEN is released as a by-product. The glucose is then polymerised into starch for storage.
